On April 9, 2009, during the annual Human Design event in Ibiza, Ra Uru Hu, the founder of the Human Design System, celebrated his birthday by offering a free talk to a group of teenagers, including his son and his friends. This session, known as "Ra Uru Hu's Teen Talk," was designed to introduce young individuals to the foundational concepts of Human Design, providing them with tools to navigate the complexities of adolescence.

Understanding Human Design

Human Design is a synthesis of ancient and modern sciences, combining elements from astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, and quantum physics. It offers a comprehensive framework for understanding human nature, decision-making processes, and the unique energies that each person embodies. At its core, Human Design provides insights into one's authentic self and offers strategies to live in alignment with one's true nature.

The Essence of Type, Strategy, and Authority

In his talk, Ra Uru Hu emphasized three fundamental components of the Human Design System: Type, Strategy, and Authority.

  1. Type: There are four primary Types in Human Design—Manifestors, Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors. Each Type has a distinct aura and role:
    • Manifestors: Initiators who can act independently and bring new ideas into reality.
    • Generators: Builders with sustainable energy, designed to respond to life's opportunities.
    • Projectors: Guides who have a deep understanding of others and are here to direct energy.
    • Reflectors: Mirrors of the community, reflecting the health and well-being of their environment.
  2. Strategy: Each Type has a corresponding Strategy that aligns them with their natural flow:
    • Manifestors: To inform others before taking action.
    • Generators: To wait and respond to external stimuli.
    • Projectors: To wait for recognition and invitation.
    • Reflectors: To wait a lunar cycle (approximately 28 days) before making significant decisions.
  3. Authority: This refers to the internal mechanism each individual uses to make decisions aligned with their true self. Authorities can be Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Environmental (Mental Projector), or Lunar (for Reflectors). Understanding one's Authority is crucial for making decisions free from external conditioning.

Navigating Adolescence with Human Design

Adolescence is a period marked by exploration, identity formation, and the influence of external pressures from family, peers, and society. Ra Uru Hu recognized these challenges and tailored his discussion to address them through the lens of Human Design.

  • Embracing Individuality: By understanding their unique Type, teenagers can appreciate their distinct energies and roles. This self-awareness fosters self-acceptance and reduces the tendency to conform to societal expectations.

The Human Design System, as transmitted by Ra Uru Hu, is a revolutionary synthesis of ancient and modern wisdom, providing a map of our energetic mechanics. It is a system designed for practical use—one that allows each individual to live correctly according to their unique design. Among the core teachings of Ra Uru Hu is the concept of being "Empowered in the Now," a fundamental principle that aligns with the deeper truth of how human beings are meant to experience life.

To understand what Ra meant by being empowered in the now, we must explore how Human Design reveals the mechanics of decision-making, personal authority, and the movement away from mental conditioning towards a more aligned and natural way of being.

The Illusion of Mental Control

Ra Uru Hu consistently emphasized that the human mind is not meant to be the decision-maker in life. The greatest conditioning force that keeps people disempowered is the belief that the mind is the authority. Ra taught that the mind is conditioned by external influences—society, family, education, and the collective programming of fear and insecurity. It does not operate from our unique truth but from the stories and conditioning it has absorbed over time.

The mind is an excellent tool for observing and analyzing the world, but when it takes control of decisions, it pulls individuals away from their natural path. This leads to frustration, bitterness, anger, and disappointment—manifestations of being out of alignment with one's correct life trajectory.

To be empowered in the now, one must stop making decisions from the mind and return to their Inner Authority, which is revealed through the Human Design bodygraph.

The Role of Strategy and Authority in Empowerment

In traditional Human Design, Strategy and Authority are the two key elements that guide an individual back to their true nature. Each Type in Human Design has a correct way to engage with life, known as its Strategy. This is not something the mind invents but a deeply embedded energetic response mechanism.

  • Manifestors: Empowerment in the now comes from informing before acting and embracing their initiating energy without resistance. When Manifestors move according to their Strategy, they experience a flow of initiation and impact without unnecessary external interference.
  • Generators and Manifesting Generators: These beings are designed to wait to respond rather than initiate from the mind. Their power lies in their gut response, which signals when something is correct for them. Acting from this response allows them to move in alignment with life, rather than forcing outcomes.
  • Projectors: Their empowerment comes from waiting for recognition and invitations before engaging in major life decisions. Unlike the mind’s urge to push for validation, true empowerment for Projectors is found in patience and correct recognition.
  • Reflectors: Empowerment for Reflectors is about waiting for a full lunar cycle to gain clarity. This process prevents mental impatience and allows their natural wisdom to guide them.

By following Strategy and Authority, individuals reclaim their power in the now. Instead of mentally projecting into the past or future, they become deeply aligned with their present moment experience.

The Present Moment and the Mechanics of Awareness

Ra Uru Hu frequently spoke about how the mind keeps people locked in time-based illusions—regrets of the past and anxieties about the future. This constant mental chatter distracts individuals from their true empowerment, which is only ever available in the now.

In Human Design, the three Centers responsible for awareness are:

  1. The Splenic Center (instantaneous survival awareness)
  2. The Solar Plexus Center (wave-based emotional awareness)
  3. The Ajna Center (conceptual mental awareness)

Each of these operates in a different timeline. The Splenic Center is the only awareness center that operates in the now. The Spleen provides instant knowing, an intuitive survival intelligence that speaks only once. In contrast, the Emotional Solar Plexus processes life in waves, meaning that clarity comes over time, not in the immediate moment. The Ajna Center conceptualizes based on memory and future projections, but it is not a place of truth.

For those with Splenic Authority, empowerment in the now means trusting their spontaneous inner knowing. For those with Emotional Authority, being empowered in the now means allowing emotional clarity to unfold over time without forcing immediate decisions. In all cases, authority is always in the body—not the mind.

The Not-Self and the Disempowerment of Mental Decisions

The concept of the Not-Self is fundamental in Ra Uru Hu’s teachings. The Not-Self is the conditioned mental identity that arises when people ignore their Strategy and Authority. Instead of living in alignment, they make decisions from their mind, leading to suffering and resistance.

Each Type experiences the Not-Self in different ways:

  • Generators experience frustration when they try to control outcomes rather than responding.
  • Manifestors experience anger when they act without informing and meet resistance.
  • Projectors experience bitterness when they try to force recognition.
  • Reflectors experience disappointment when they engage with the wrong environments.

To be empowered in the now, one must observe the Not-Self without engaging with it. Ra Uru Hu taught that awareness of mental conditioning is the first step to freedom. Once individuals recognize how their mind has been making decisions for them, they can begin the process of deconditioning.

The Deconditioning Process: Returning to Presence

Ra emphasized that deconditioning is a seven-year process—the time it takes for all of the body’s cells to regenerate. This is not an instant transformation but a journey of realigning with one’s authentic self.

The deconditioning process involves:

  1. Noticing when decisions come from the mind rather than from inner authority.
  2. Trusting the body’s intelligence over mental reasoning.
  3. Living according to Strategy and Authority, allowing natural alignment.
  4. Releasing the need for external validation and embracing one's unique path.

This process gradually dissolves the hold of mental conditioning, bringing individuals back to their true empowerment. The more consistently a person follows their design, the more they experience the correctness of their life unfolding effortlessly.

True Empowerment: Surrendering to the Mechanics of Life

Ra Uru Hu’s core message was not about personal control but surrender to form consciousness—the intelligence of the body’s design. He often stated that life is a movie, and we are here to watch it unfold according to our correct nature.
