Ra Uru Hu spent years refining and disseminating this knowledge, forming a foundation for what is now known as Human Design. The Nature of the Unconscious

According to Ra, our Design Crystal carries an imprint that is largely inaccessible to our conscious minds. It governs our physicality, our automatic responses, and how we function in space and time. Not-Self Conditioning: A Reflection of the Unconscious

Because we are not actively aware of it, we mistakenly attribute certain thoughts, emotions, and decisions to our true selves when, in reality, they are shaped by external influences playing upon the openness in our chart.
For instance, an undefined Emotional Center may unknowingly amplify the emotions of those around it, leading to decisions based on temporary highs and lows. An undefined Ego Center may chase after validation without understanding that it is not designed to prove anything. These unconscious patterns run in the background, shaping our lives unless we bring awareness to them through Strategy and Authority.
The Mechanics of Sleep: A Window Into the Unconscious
One of Ra's more esoteric teachings related to what happens behind our backs was his exploration of the mechanics of sleep. He explained that when we sleep, our Personality Crystal effectively disengages, leaving only the Design Crystal active. This means that our unconscious form operates freely, without the interference of our waking mind. This can be an insightful key to understanding how different our Design experience can be from our conscious perception of ourselves.
Ra even suggested that what we experience in dreams is often a reflection of the Design Crystal’s activity, rather than the desires and thoughts of our Personality Crystal. This perspective challenges conventional psychological models of dreaming and offers a deeper look into the hidden mechanics governing our life experience.
The Role of the Magnetic Monopole
The Magnetic Monopole is a key concept in Human Design, responsible for holding together our conscious and unconscious aspects. Unlike the dualistic nature of human perception, the Magnetic Monopole is a unifying force, keeping the Personality Crystal and Design Crystal aligned within a singular trajectory. Ra described it as the driver of our life vehicle—it does not allow us to control the destination but ensures we remain on the correct path when we follow our Strategy and Authority.
This invisible force works "behind our back," ensuring that we meet the right people, encounter the right experiences, and move through life in alignment with our true design. When we attempt to take control consciously, we often create resistance, leading to frustration, bitterness, anger, or disappointment—hallmarks of Not-Self themes.
The Biverse: Living in a Two-Fold Reality
Ra Uru Hu introduced the concept of the "Biverse" to explain the duality of existence—what is seen and what operates beyond our perception. He suggested that while we experience life linearly, there is an underlying structure where past, present, and future coexist. The Design Crystal and the Magnetic Monopole interact within this larger framework, guiding our path without our conscious intervention.
Understanding this duality reinforces why it is essential to trust Strategy and Authority. When we attempt to impose control based on the limited awareness of our Personality Crystal, we move away from the natural intelligence that already knows our correct path. Ra urged individuals to surrender to the mechanics of their design rather than fighting against them.
Strategy and Authority: The Key to Alignment
Recognizing what is happening "behind your back" is only useful if one knows how to navigate it. Ra Uru Hu always pointed back to Strategy and Authority as the solution. These mechanics, based on our individual Type and Authority, allow us to bypass the distortions of the Not-Self and instead align with our true Design.
By following Strategy (whether it be Waiting for the Invitation as a Projector, Responding as a Generator, or Waiting for Emotional Clarity for those with Emotional Authority), we place ourselves in alignment with the natural forces directing our lives. This allows us to experience the intelligence of our Design in real time, rather than being led astray by the unconscious influences running in the background.
Ra Uru Hu’s original teachings on Human Design offer a profound understanding of the dual nature of our existence—the seen and the unseen, the conscious and the unconscious. The concept of what happens "behind your back" serves as a reminder that much of what drives us is not within our immediate awareness. However, by living according to our Design and honoring our Strategy and Authority, we can bring harmony between these two aspects, allowing for a life of greater authenticity and ease.
